Smile for Jackie

I wrote this song over a decade ago, and still play it every chance I get. It was originally called "Smile" and was only dedicated to a passing friend a few months later. I think the message of the song is pretty clear, "live for the ones who've died" but beneath that it hints at seizing the everyday moments we take for granted. Enjoy, and smile would ya?
Gotta love the little things in life
the moments we all know, might never happen twice
Appreciate all we have tonight
the little things that make us who we are inside
Gotta smile for the ones we've lost
we keep them living in our stories and our hearts
But don't you look up high and ask them what to do
they just wanna see you smile and go on being you
Raise my glass, to the sky
Live for the ones who've died
Wipe that tear from my eyes
Death only lives in goodbyes
Gotta hate the way a good night ends
when the music skips and your singin' with your friends
Take a glance at the empty chair
imagine how this moment would feel if you were there
Gotta hate the way a good time flies
the funny face you make when the sun is in your eyes
But don't you curse that star when it shines upon your face
Life ain't long enough to live it like a race
Raise my glass, to the sky
Live for the ones who've died
Wipe that tear from my eyes
Death only lives in goodbyes
